A portion of the Winter Garden Police Department’s headquarters was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a staffer opened a suspicious letter, according to authorities.

An administrative assistant who received the letter — which did not have a return address — notified authorities after seeing what she believed was a “white puff” after opening the envelope, police Lt. Scott Allen said.

Two offices in the police department’s headquarters on West Plant Street were evacuated while firefighters investigated the letter, Allen said. Operations were back to normal by 5 p.m.

While no powder was found in the envelope, some of the comments written in the letter were concerning, Allen said.

“The letter was suspicious in nature, but there was no white power inside,” he said.

Police are investigating.
